Search Engines: Improving Search Results Easily

Search engines are useful tools aimed at helping users find info they need. Search engines put together a database of sites by sending "spiders" or "robots" which go from link to link. When spiders get to a website, they index most of the words on the available pages. The search engine scans its database of sites to match the keywords, which you have typed in the search field, to those same keywords in pages in the data bank. How to make the search more efficient? It is easy and simple to improve your search results. You simply need to know some basic information. Some search engines have menus explaining how to do this but for others you have to enter appropriate commands. The following basic commands should be plenty of info for most users and should work effectively in most of the major search engines. - Specify what you're looking for The more specific you are, the more information you'll find. Tell the search engine exactly what you're looking for. Fir instance, if you're seeking science experiments, enter School Science Fair Projects rather of science projects. If you know it's a physics experiment, add the word 'physics' to your search. - The + symbol The most important words in your search should be put first. To make sure the search engine finds pages containing all the words you're seeking, put the + symbol in front of each word. For example, if you're searching for information on Jennifer Lopez and Mark Antony, then enter +Lopez +Antony. Only pages which contain both words will be found. - The - symbol If you're seeking something specific but don't need tons of other information that's not related to your subject, put the - symbol in front of each term. For example, if you're seeking information on Rafael Nadal but don't want to read about his career, enter Rafael Nadal -Pro -Tennis Player. - Using quotation marks When search terms are put in quotation marks, it's called a "phrase search." The search engine will show pages that have the words in the exact order as in quotations. Fir instance, if you're looking specifically for a bio on Tyra Banks, enter "Tyra Banks Biography" and see what comes up. - Using boolean operators Booleans can be applied in most major search engines which provide advanced searching options. The most popular boolean operators are AND, OR and NOT. Booleans are like the + and - symbols. AND means "include all of the words," OR means "include any of the words" and NOT means "exclude." Fir instance, if you're looking for information on skin care and hair care, enter skin care AND hair care. Your search will bring back sites containing both those words.
